Terms of Service

1. Agreement

These Terms govern DeAnzaCompass and its Chrome extension (the “Service”). You accept them by checking “I agree” when you sign up or before your first import, and by using the Service. Do not use the Service if you do not agree. We record the version and time of your acceptance.

2. Who may use it

The Service is intended for users in the United States. You must be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian's permission to use it; if you are under 18, you confirm you have that permission.

3. Unofficial; not advice

DeAnzaCompass is independent. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by De Anza College, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, ASSIST.org, or the University of California.

Results are estimates from public data that may be incomplete, outdated or wrong, and they are not academic, transfer, financial or legal advice. Confirm requirements with a De Anza counselor and the receiving institution before relying on them; the institution's decision is final.

4. Your data

Import only your own audit. You own your data. You give us a license to host, back up, reproduce, process and display it solely to operate the Service for you. We will not use it otherwise, including for de-identified analytics, without telling you first. See the Privacy Policy.

5. The extension and third-party systems

The extension reads Degree Works only when you click Import. You are responsible for following the college's rules for using Degree Works. We make no claim that third-party systems permit or will keep permitting this access.

6. Acceptable use

Do not access others' data; probe, scan or attack the Service; bypass rate limits or security; scrape or overload it; upload malware or unlawful content; reverse engineer it except as law allows; or misrepresent your academic status.

7. Intellectual property

The Service's code, design and branding are ours or our licensors', subject to any open-source licenses. Transfer and catalog data come from third-party publishers and remain theirs; their inclusion is not an endorsement and gives you no license to reuse it.

We grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive license to use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes.

8. Changes and termination

The Service is free, may change, be interrupted or end at any time, and we may suspend access for misuse. We will give at least 14 days' email or in-app notice of material changes to these Terms; if you disagree, stop using the Service and delete your data. You can stop and delete at any time.

9. Disclaimer

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING ACCURACY, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

10. Limitation of liability

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST ADMISSION OPPORTUNITIES, UNITS, TIME OR DATA, AND OUR TOTAL LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO US$100.

None of this limits liability for fraud, willful misconduct, gross negligence, violations of law, or anything that cannot be limited under applicable law (including California Civil Code §1668 and statutory data-breach remedies). Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limits, so they may not apply to you.

11. Governing law and disputes

California law governs, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the state or federal courts in TODO: county County, California, unless your local law requires otherwise. Before filing, please email us and give 30 days to resolve it informally.

12. General

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our not enforcing a provision is not a waiver. We may assign these Terms to a successor to the Service; you may not assign yours. We are not liable for delays beyond our reasonable control. Sections that by nature should survive termination do.
